Summary | The present paper discusses the wind force coefficients for the design on hyperbolic paraboloid (HP) shaped free roofs. Three roofs with different rise/span (or sag/span) ratios are tested. Design wind force coefficients for structural members are proposed in the present paper, based on a wind tunnel experiment with rigid models. Regarding the wind force coefficients on HP free roofs, the Australia/New Zealand (AS/NZ) Standard (2011) provides the specifications. However, the range of roof shape for which the wind force coefficients are specified is rather limited. The proposed design wind force coefficients are compared with the values of the AS/NZ Standard. Moreover, structural analyses were made for three HP shaped membrane free roofs with the same rise/span ratio and different structural systems by using the proposed design wind force coefficients to investigate their application to the membrane structures with various roof supporting systems. The results of member sizing suggest that the proposed design wind force coefficients should be improved. Finally, the effect of roof deformation on the wind forces is evaluated by CFD and structural analysis. The results also suggest that the improvement of wind force coefficients is necessary to take into account the roof deformation. |
